D.Phil. Oxford (1995)
Currently: Professor at the Microbiology Department of the Biomedical Sciences Institute at University of São Paulo
  • Group structure: Currently, my group has 12 members (2 technicians, 4 master students, 4 PhD students and 2 post-doc fellows) working on the evolutionary biology, bioinformatics and functional genomics of viruses. We have cell culture, cloning and molecular biology facilities including, automated sequencers, realtime PCR and Immune-fluorescense capabilities. Moreover we have a high performance computing HPC unit with cluster computation for complex protein homology-modeling and phylodynamics studies of viral populations.
  • Mission: We work on baculovirus (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and gene regulatory network GRN modeling and evolution), HIV-1 (molecular epidemiology, functional studies on complete genomes of HIV-1 isolates from our epidemics and, in silico structural studies of the protease), arboviruses (gene and genome-based phylogeography and functional studies on the E gene of Dengue and the evolution of several other African arboviruses, such as RVFV, Zika, Barkedji flavivirus and WN).
  • Networking: We have acted as the bioinformatics and molecular biology central laboratory of the Viral Genetic Diversity Network (VGDN) program since 2001, coordinating 22 laboratories sequencing HIV-1, HCV, HRSV and Hantaviruses. Moreover, we have a strong collaboration with PennState University (PA, USA), Santa Fe Institute (NM, USA) and the Pasteur Institute (Dakar, Senegal) and several other groups in Brazil.
